About the Children’s Rights Policy Project

The Children’s Rights Policy Project is an exciting new pro bono legal initiative as part of the Glasgow Open Justice Centre (GO Justice). The project will allow you to learn new skills in using the children’s rights to affect change in law, policy, and practice.

You will be working alongside Bruce Adamson, the former Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland, on a project which will have direct impact on the domestic realisation of children’s rights in Scotland and support the development of the next General Comment of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child.

The project will run from January to March 2024 over an eight week period with 2 hours of supervision each week.

As part of the process of facilitating and monitoring the implementation of the Concluding Observations the project will review child friendly complaints mechanisms across the various areas highlighted: schools, alternative care settings, foster care systems, mental health settings and detention and make rights based recommendations for improvement.

The project is seeking to recruit 10 UofG Law student volunteers in their 3rd or 4th year of study or undertaking an LLM.

You should be prepared to commit 4 hours per week over the 8-week period. This will be a mixture of in-person sessions in the Law School (on Wednesday afternoons from 2-4pm) as well as ad hoc research remotely and / or meetings online at other times.

Introductions meetings will take place w/c 15 January 2024 and the first supervision session will be Wednesday 24 January 2024 and then each Wednesday thereafter until 13 March 2023

To apply for this position please email a copy of your CV (including grades achieved in subjects so far) and a short statement of interest/cover letter (no more than 500 words) to law-gojustice@glasgow.ac.uk

Application Deadline: Monday 11 December 2023, 5pm.
