UofG team compete at Vis Moot in Vienna
Between 11th April - 17th April, the University Glasgow team, comprising of Ryan Mackenzie, William Murray, Gavin McLean and Cameron Lambie competed in the 32nd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna.
The Vis Moot is the largest international commercial moot in the world, styled as an arbitration moot, as opposed to litigation. This year saw around 360 teams from around the world compete in Vienna in April, with almost 1200 legal academics and practitioners sitting as arbitrators.
The University of Glasgow team competed in 4 general rounds against Vilnius University, the University of Lausanne, Univérsité Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth and the Federal University of Bahia, with the rounds taking place in the University of Vienna faculty and on one occasion at the Dorda law firm’s office. In order to prepare for the Vis, the team have spent 9 months researching and rehearsing their arguments, having written and submitted written memorandums in December and January respectively. The team were coached by three students who have previously competed – Declan Ritchie, Atrin Zolghadr and Jodie Hofford, with support and guidance from Dr Obiora Ezike.
The team had an incredible experience in Vienna, networking with law students, academics and practitioners from around the world, and although they unfortunately did not qualify for the elimination rounds, all would highly recommend to students considering applying for the team next year.
The team and coaches would like to express their gratitude to Dr Obiora Ezike, as well as the School of Law for their very generous financial and administrative support.
